| What is Stormwater? |
Stormwater is the water flow that results from rainfall or melting snow.
| What is Stormwater Runoff? |
Stormwater runoff is water from rain or melting snow that runs off across the land instead of infiltrating into the ground.
Stormwater runoff is unfiltered or untreated water that reaches our streams, lakes, creeks and oceans by flowing across impervious surfaces.
Impervious surfaces like streets, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks prevent stormwater runoff from naturally soaking into the ground.
| What is the Problem? |
When it rains, it drains.
Stormwater can pick up dirt, oil, grease, pesticide, chemicals, and other pollutants as it travels.
Polluted stormwater is also called "nonpoint source pollution" because the pollution problems come from many different sources as opposed to a "point source" such as a factory.
Stormwater runoff does not flow into the sewer and to the wastewater treatment plant for clean up.
Polluted stormwater flows right into our fresh water rivers, streams, creeks, and other water sources.

Another concern is Illicit Discharge:
An illicit discharge is any non-allowable discharge to a municipal separate storm sewer system that is not made up of entirely storm water.
The exception is waters used for firefighting operations and those allowed under NPDES permit.
