Properly Disposing of Pet Waste |
 |
|
A simple solution to water pollution is picking up after your dog whether you are walking your dog in a park, in your neighborhood or even in your own backyard.
Pet waste is a major source of bacteria that ends up in our streams.
When it rains, your pets "business" left on sidewalks, streets, yards or other open areas is washed down into the street and storm drain and into the nearest waterway.
When pet waste is washed into lakes or streams the waste decays, using up oxygen and often times releasing ammonia.
This combined with warm temperatures can kill fish.
Pet waste also contains nutrients that encourage algae growth making water become cloudy and green, discouraging recreation activities.
