Volunteer Opportunities |
Plain Township is in the process of organizing a stormwater catch basin stenciling program, and is seeking volunteers to help with this extensive project.
On Friday, June 13, 2008, members of Boy Scout Troop 12 and 15 stepped forward to participate in educating the public by placing "No Dumping, Drains to Waterway" stickers on 68 catch basins in the Bob-O-Link allotment.
They also went door to door handing out the reading materials about storm water management.
This is a very important step in educating our residents about the importance of keeping our rivers and streams free of pollutants.
Thank you Troop 12 and Troop 15 for your commitment to the community! |

| What is storm water stenciling? |
Storm water stenciling is a coordinated effort to paint educational messages on local storm drains and basins that flow to important water bodies.
| Why do we stenciling? |
Organizing a storm water stenciling project is an important environmental initiative that can lead to cleaner, healthier drinking and recreation water for our homes, communities and our neighbors downstream.
This educational outreach message alerts the communities about nonpoint-source (NPS) pollution.
The purpose of stenciling storm drains is to help reduce or eliminate NPS pollution.
Stenciling the words "Do Not Dump, Drains to Lake", warns the community not to dump pollutants in catch basins.
| What is NPS pollution? |
Nonpoint source pollution is caused when rainfall carries pollutants from a wide variety of sources into surface water or ground water.
The most common route for NPS is the network of storm drains carrying excess rainwater away from streets directly into waterways such as creeks, ponds, lakes and rivers.
Some NPS pollutants are motor oils, detergents, coolants, grass clippings, paints, solvents, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, pet waste, cigarette butts, plastics, tires, batteries, road salt, etc.
These can all affect ground and surface water. This kind of

pollution is always caused by humans.

| How can I help? |
Plain Township is seeking volunteers and volunteer groups, such as girl scouts, boy scouts, 4-H Clubs, environmental clubs, churches, youth groups, neighborhood associations, grade school classes, and other civic and service organizations.
Adult supervision is needed when the volunteers are school children or members of a youth group.
If you would like to volunteer, please call the Plain Township Road Department at 330-492-3423.
