Plain Township kicked off our first ever Earth Day Celebration in honor of the Bicentennial on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at noon. Hundreds people showed up to celebrate our planet and the Bicentennial. The first 100 citizens who attended received a free white pine tree sapling to take home, enjoyed concessions courtesy of Pepsi, and took place in various activities. The Plain Township Historical Society was present to distribute information, as well as our other sponsors Mercy Medical, Howard Hanna Real Estate Agent Linda Gambol, and Cutler Real Estate Agent Denise Evans.
Trustees Lou Giavasis and Al Leno, along with Fiscal Officer Skip Shriver and Bicentennial Chairman Rick Campbell were present to plant and dedicate a beautiful elm tree, donated by Rice’s Nursery. This tree was planted in honor of the bicentennial at the Plain Township Hall, 2600 Easton Street NE.
The All Star Kids Childcare Center joined us for fun, earth-friendly crafts that promote recycling. The children were able to make flowers out of recycled egg cartons, bendy straws, and paint; butterflies out of recycled dryer sheets, pipe cleaners, and chalk; and created "edible compost piles" out of chocolate pudding, cookie crumbs, sprinkles, and gummy worms. If you would like to try some of these crafts, and more, visit today!
